CELEBRATING OUR EXCELLENT STAFF - 2007 STAFF EXCELLENCE AWARDS

Ballina RSL is committed to acknowledging employees who provide exceptional service. One of the ways we do this is through the annual Ballina RSL Staff Excellence Awards, now in its sixth year. The awards help create the ethic within the Club of “Excellence in All We Do”.

Congratulations to the following welldeserving recipients from this year’s Staff Excellence Awards: Denis Hicks (Food Service Awards), Paul Job (Bar Service Award), Trevor Poole (General Achievement Award), Daniel Morrissey (Rookie of the Year Award). The Staff Member of the Year Award was awarded to Club Supersivor David Skinner.

In 2007, a very special ’20 Years of Service’ Award was presented to some long-standing, loyal employees. Recipients included: Ros Anderson, Jan Pauling, “Dasha”, Alf Barnett, Matt O’Brien and Mark Geyer. This particular group stands as testament to a committed and experienced team of staff across the Ballina RSL organisations.

Special thanks must go to the Staff Excellence Awards Organising Committee for their efforts in coordinating such a fabulous celebration – Trish Cook, Vicki Veitch, Jan Pauling, Fiona Graham, Sandra Bullen and Fred Wallace.

TIRELESS TEAMWORK (Taken from Club Life Summer edition 2007/08 from the General Manager

Just where did 2007 go? With all that’s been happening in the club’s year, I can hardly believe that we’re almost about to blow those party whistles again on New Year’s Eve!

We’ve now officially opened… and launched… the Ballina RSL’s fabulous new look ground floor (with feedback equally as fabulous!).
I cannot begin to thank our members and our community enough for their unwavering support throughout 2007!

Our directors, managers and staff have worked tirelessly, and as a team, to serve you across both of our clubs. Again, I thank each and every one of them for their magnificent efforts and achievements in 2007.

With our new Ballina RSL ground floor dining options open – the boardwalk and the river café – plus a sensational entertainment line up over the next few months, I look forward to seeing you in our clubs over the summer.

There are also many member benefits to be enjoyed – when you belong to our clubs, we reward your loyalty during each and every visit.

Alongside our new Chairman and Directors, our Club Management team (Executive & Duty Managers), and staff are already planning more great initiatives for 2008. As well as welcoming new directors to our board in 2007, it is important for me to also highlight to our club stakeholder networks that we’ve also welcomed new managers at the Executive Management level. Caroline Kirkland joined us earlier in the year as our new Human Resources Manager and Marisa Poptie followed as our new Operations/Gaming Manager.

We now have a full Club Management Team at Ballina RSL Club Ltd that will be working with our Directors, myself as General Manager our Assistant General Manager, staff, members, and our community, to build upon the solid platform that has been
established and further progress the club’s outcomes.

Best wishes for a fun and fantastic festive season … keep on celebrating with us the whole year round!

FROM STENGTH TO STRENGTH (taken from Club Life Summer Edition 2007/08 from the Chairman

As the new Ballina RSL Chairman, I am looking forward to working with my fellow directors, management and staff in ways that will continue to enhance outcomes for the club and for our wider community.

Over the coming months, I also look forward to meeting with various club stakeholders to glean member and community viewpoints on the manner in which our clubs have both been progressing.

The Ballina RSL is going from strength to strength. The recent renovations have certainly been well-accepted by both members and the community. We will be striving to continue to offer members and visitors a range of quality entertainment, dining and leisure experiences at both the Ballina RSL Club and the Ballina RSL Bowling Club.

We will now also be taking further steps to progress the club’s masterplan with construction on our boardwalk commencing early in the New Year. By becoming a major link for public access to the river and foreshore walkway, the Ballina RSL will be helping to create some substantial public benefits.

I would also like to take this opportunity to acknowledge the inspiring efforts from outgoing chairman Bob Grant and outgoing, retiring club directors Ted Armstrong and Bruce Stacy. We will all miss Bob, Bruce and Ted but know that they won’t be too far away as they’ll be visiting the club regularly to enjoy the fruits of their labours. The mateship bonds between our club’s past and present directors have always been strong.

I am also proud to announce and welcome three new incoming directors to the board – Kevin Hanns, Graeme “Blue” McNally and Bill Moore.

My very best wishes to you and your family for a very happy Christmas and a safe and prosperous New Year.

ON THE CREST OF A WAVE (SPRING 2007 EDITION BALLINA CLUB LIFE)

After 14 years on the Ballina RSL Club's Board of Directors - nine as Chairman... Bob Grant is retiring.

Yes... he really is... retiring...

This is a significant event, so we've decided to break with the tradition for this edition and, instead of the Chairman's Report, we've asked Bob and his wonderful wife Nancy to reflect on a 'pretty fair innings'...

Bob, when did you and Nancy first move to Ballina?

Roughly 23 years ago... to retire... but it didn't happen!

Why did you choose Ballina?

Nancy and I made a conscious decision to retire in Ballina many years ago because both of our families live in Lismore/Ballina and we had not lived in the area since our marriage in 1954.

Where had you been living and working previously?

Mainly in Brisbane and Sydney (as a Bank Industrial Relations Manager) but we also had 5 years in Port Moresby in the transition to Self-government and Independence (1975). I was posted to Port Moresby in 1971 to localise the Commonwealth Bank staff prior to the hand-over of the bank to the first government in Papua New Guinea. We lived in Caloundra for 2 years where the family had a newsagency.

Were you associated with any other clubs prior to moving to Ballina and joining the Ballina RSL Club?

Only in Port Moresby where I served on the committee of the Aviat Sporting and Social Club for two years.

How and when did you first strike up an association with the Club?

I joined the Club at the time the Bowling Club was moving to Canal Road. The first two people I met were Ted Armstrong and Lionel O'Neill and we formed very close friendships until Lionel's death some years ago. Ted joined the Board 14 years ago at about the same time as I did. I served on the bowling committee for about 7 years, 3 of those as president.

When did you become Chairman of the Board and why did you want to take on this role?

On 25 October 1998. My peers appointed me to the position and I believed I could make a contribution to the Club's advancement.

What are some of your most memorable moments as Chairman of the Ballina RSL Club?

There are many but the one I cherish the most resulted from the demolition of the old wharf and construction of a replacement structure that allowed everyone access to the area. I went out onto the wharf one afternoon soon after the wharf had been opened and a gentleman in a wheelchair gave me a round of applause. I asked what the applause was for and was told that he had been coming to the Club for many years but had never been able to get close to the water as the old structure was not "wheelchair friendly".

What have been some of the most significant club achievements during your Chairmanship?

The purchase of Club premises from the Ballina RSL Sub Branch; demolition of and rebuilding the wharf; and the recently completed upgrade of the club's ground floor operations.

What are some of the best features of the new-look Ballina RSL Club?

The resort-style relaxing atmosphere; the accessibility of the whole of the ground floor to everyone; the extremly high quality furniture, fittings and general decor. The new cafe and the upgrading of the kitchen should please all of our members.

What kind of experiences can members and visitors enjoy in the new-look Ballina RSL Club?

I would hope that our members enjoy an experience in modern facilities that are long overdue. What has been done is for the benefit of members and our community. There are new dining and entertainment experiences... and hopefully something for everyone irrespective of age.

Why are clubs important?

Clubs offer members and their guests dining and scial experience in a relaxing, safe atmosphere. They also invest in their communities.

In what ways can community members support the club as it continues to move forward?

We have always had wonderful support from our members and the community. For the Club to progress, that support is essential.

What do you see in Ballina's future?

There is no stopping Ballina's progress. Our town has everything you could ask for. You cannot stifle development but some people do have difficulty accepting change. I would like to think the vocal minority would leap into the 21st century and leave the sustainable development of our community in the hands of those charged with such responsibilities.

Why are you retiring now?

Putting it simply... I am past my used-by date! Unlike those who cannot see the indicators, I know that now is the time and what better time to leave than on "the crest of a wave" that the upgrade of the Club has created.

Any plans for your retirement?

Spend more time with my wife (Nancy has been a "Club widow" for 14 years), do some travelling, go fishing, play bowls and hopefully read the five books that i have started but not yet finished... including Colleen McCullough's "Caesar" and Gerald Stone's "Who Killed Channel 9".

Nancy... as the Ballina RSL's "first lady" for so many years, what are some of your most memorable moments from all those official events you have attended in this role?

I have enjoyed each and every function that I have attended with Bob and we place great importance on our representational roles. Personally, I love the Lions Youth of the Year events because they make us feel so proud of the young men and women as we watch them grow in confidence and achieve so much. The Chef's Table is the highlight of the past three years. It is wonderful to see how professional our winning chefs really are.

Bob has achieved much in his role as Chairman - what are the qualities that 'maketh' the great man?

His sincerity and the fact that he "wears his heart on his sleeve" in matters relating to the club. He simply loves the club and everything about it! He takes his representational duties extremely seriously and dresses for the occasion, sometimes a little too formally in my opinion but that is the man and you will not change him. He is also generous with his time and enjoys work, possibly too much! He has only missed a handful of Board Meetings in the past 14 years and one of those absences occured when he had by-pass surgery.

What are some of the challenges that you and Bob have had to face together during his time as Chairman?

It is really difficult to outline the challenges we have faced together in the past 14 years with the Club. Many people would not see the role of a director of the Club as carrying too many responsibilities. I wish that was correct! Having witnessed at first hand some of the pressures directors have been exposed to, I would like to think that members would become more aware of just what directors do for them. I guess you learn to take the good with the bad and fortunately there are more good times than bad. You just have to get on with the job.

What are you both planning to enjoy together in the future?

Bob is a really good cook and now that we'll have some more leisure time, we will spend some of it in the kitchen. There's a rumour around Ballina that we're moving on. Totally incorrect!!! We'll be here for a long time yet!

Can we expect to see you both visiting the club regularly and keeping a healthy eye on us all??!!

We both love the Club and you can rest assured we will be spending time there. You will not keep Bob away from the place for long but I can assure you that his role will cease at this year's AGM. He will of course always be ready to offer advice if asked. We both wish the incoming Board and the Club every success for the future.

SURF'S UP - FROM THE GENERAL MANAGER (SPRING 2007 EDITION BALLINA CLUB LIFE)

Our long-serving Chairman is indeed retiring 'on the crest of a wave' in light of all recent major club developments. I would like to take this opportunity, on behalf of all at the Ballina RSL Club, to acknowledge the enormous contribution that Bob Grant has made to our club. Bob has helped steer this organisation towards an amazing future. We also thank Bob's wife Nancy for her considerable support of all club activities throughout the past 14 years. We look forward to their ongoing company as valued friends.... and to the invitations to all those delicious home-cooked dinners now that Bob will have more time on his hands!

To all those remaining... the theme really is 'surf's up'... due to the hard work of all of our Directors, management and staff. That is, there will be many, many good waves (in so many different forms) for our members and community to ride into the much talked about 'exciting and secure future'... it's fast becoming our reality.

We look forward to unveiling, opening and launching all that our new-look club has to offer - an entirely different experience altogether!

I also wish to thank our members and community for their unwavering support over this past year and congratulate our entire team on our recent 'Best Service Club' category win in the 2007 Ballina Shire Business Excellence Awards. That is our 7th award in 3 years and we were absolutely chuffed to have our ongoing commitment to business and community excellence officially recognised once again!

We keep coming first, because we put YOU first...

WE'RE FOR YOU - FROM THE GENERAL MANAGER (WINTER 2007 EDITION BALLINA CLUB LIFE)

You may have seen the recent ClubsNSW television campaign that echoes sentiments along the lines of … ‘This is your club now’ and
‘At your club, everybody’s welcome’. So what are they really getting at? Recent changes impacting on all clubs across New South Wales have meant that clubs are now placing an increasing emphasis on becoming even better havens for great food, entertainment
and recreation. It’s that simple.

Indoor smoking bans come into effect on July 2 in all licensed premises and our clubs are ready for such change – in fact – we’re embracing this change and are looking to improve our service across the board for the enjoyment of all patrons – existing and potential. Our new outdoor areas will boast some of the best river views in town!

And here’s some food for thought … A third successive win in the ClubsNSW Chef’s Table Culinary Competition is indeed proof that we continue to serve up some of the best tucker in the state! The all-new ground floor facilities (new food service areas, lounges, ports bar etc.) at the Ballina RSL will provide the icing on the cake.

We are also focusing on constantly improving the swag of entertainment on offer at both of our clubs. The Big Gigs have had many chuckling in the aisles whilst our upcoming Candlelight Dinner Shows are set to impress. And there’ll be some great family entertainment with Dorothy the Dinosaur and the Junior Star Finder Competition. It will be particularly rewarding to see more
local talent showcased in this year’s singing competitions – they’re a great way to spend a Sunday afternoon!

What a journey …and it’s not over yet by a long shot. Keep on travelling with us, sit back and enjoy the ride. I can only imagine … as I’m sure you can …that you’ll soon be stretching those legs and taking a stroll along the boardwalk!

This is your club now. We’re for you.

THERE FOR YOU - FROM THE CHAIRMAN (WINTER EDITION 2007 CLUB LIFE)

to say that there is ‘a lot’ happening in the NSW Club Industry and on our own doorstep at the moment would be a drastic understatement … to say the least!

On behalf of our Board of Directors, I wish to acknowledge the magnificent and ongoing efforts of our entire management team and staff – our ‘Construction Crew’ – (in all departments and across both of our clubs) for rising to the occasion and facing recent industry changes with considerable success. Business as usual doesn’t happen without sound planning and lots of hard work and endurance.

It’s now a well-known fact that the Ballina RSL Club is undergoing major renovations. The Ground Floor is being totally transformed and we look forward to revealing it to you in coming months.

I would like to extend warm thanks to all of our members and visitors for the way in which you have been embracing all of our various changes throughout the course of the year. The movement of our club operations from the Ground Floor to the First Floor was Accepted in such good grace. I understand that the relocation may have caused some inconvenience, particularly to older members, and I do apologise for this. Your loyalty and tolerance is greatly appreciated.

So as the industry changes, so are we changing … and … we are doing so in ways that ensure the betterment of facilities and infrastructure for our entire community. It can be said that human beings often resist change due to being creatures of habit. Well … we’re looking forward to influencing new lifestyle habits and creating some wonderful new memories with the enjoyable experiences that we can continue to offer as a result of embracing an exciting club future! Our members and visitors will be bestowed with an immensely comfortable club – a safe place where the whole family can relax.

See you there. Our clubs are there for you. They’re for you.

Snooker Club – General News

Ballina RSL Snooker Club members have not been sitting around since the snooker tables were removed from the RSL Club, whilst club renovations are being carried out.

Firstly the snooker club committee and members assisted with the removal of the tables, they have been holding regular committee meetings to keep members together while no games are being played. However, some members have had some games at the Lismore Workers Club, to keep their skills in tact!

A barbeque was held and some fishing done at Bill Palmer’s (Snooker Club President) house, then the members got involved with fund raising at a trivia night to assist Chris Hendry and his mum to go to China. Chris will be competing in Shanghai at the World Special Olympics where he will take part in several Track and Field Events. Chris, we wish you the best of luck!

Special thanks must go to the Board and Management of the Ballina RSL Club Ltd for the donation of $1,000 to assist Chris in his travels.

With more fundraising to be completed, the Snooker Club has organized a charity golf day at Wardell Sports Club on the 29th of July and everyone is asked to join in.

To book your hit off time, Phone Sue Morton on: 02 66 834 399

When the snooker tables are back in September the Snooker Club intends to arrange a competition involving the RSL Club Management, Staff and the Snooker Club Members.

For the third year running a pair of chefs working at an RSL Club on the Far North Coast has walked away with NSW’s largest culinary award, the Chef’s Table. Gerhard Spatz & Nathan Sherwood of Ballina RSL have taken the top spot despite the competition of more than 2,000 chef pairings, some from the largest clubs in NSW. The Chef’s Table award required chefs construct a three course meal using foods costing no more than $20 per person. With two judges in the kitchen and another on the restaurant floor, the pair then prepared their personally designed meal for 20 people.

The winning three course meal is:

Entrée: Baked Blue Eye Cod with Capsicum Piperade and Truffled Pea Mash, Fish Jus

Main: Beef in Pastry Spinach, Eshallot and Mushroom Farce, Asparagus, Madeira Jus. Accompanied with a Salad of Wild Roquet, Traviso Radichio, Truss Cherry Tomato, Roquefort Dressing

Desert: Baked Zabaglione Ice Cream. Cherry, Walnut and Chocolate Brownie, Malt Anglaise, Candied Banana and Italian Meringue.

ClubsNSW Chairman Peter Newell said clubs today are focusing on food like never before.

“Club dining is today very much at the high end of the restaurant industry. “Clubs have always offered excellent service which is of course a very important part of the overall dining experience. The difference now is that clubs are out there recruiting chefs, even employing directly from overseas.”

“Gerhard and Nathan’s win is one the entire Far North Coast should be proud of. To win three years running when competing against chefs from some of the most successful clubs in Australia is testament to their skill and creativity.

“By purchasing local produce and using their significant buying power, clubs have been able to lift the quality of their menus but without charging exorbitant prices," he said.

Ballina District Hospital Computerised Radiography Unit

Club members and the wider community will be aware that a committee and special fund has been established to raise $150,000 for the purchase of a Computerised Radiography Unit for Ballina District Hospital.
This is an essential piece of equipment for our hospital because it captures the x-ray image in digital format providing an ability to email such images to a specialist in the field at Lismore Base Hospital 24 hours, 7 days a week.
With this instant, ‘on-line’ facility available, fewer patients will need to be transferred to Lismore and a more timely review, diagnosis and treatment for Ballina patients will be possible.
To date, the committee has raised $113,843 via the Ballina Shire “Healthy Community Futures” Fund. This is a great effort but there are still a large number of businesses and individuals in our community that have, to date, not made a contribution.
Donations can be made at National Australia Bank’s Ballina Branch or the Richmond Mortgage Fund (4 Martin Street Ballina).
If you’d like to make a donation but are unable to get to either of these locations, please give me a call on 0421-046-700. For your convenience, I can arrange to collect your donation.
Raising this amount of money is an extremely challenging task. I have been particularly touched by the number of elderly people who have approached me with donations that they really must have difficulty in making.
One gentleman gave me $100 with the comment, “It is all I can afford at the moment. As soon as I have some more I will give it to you”.
Come on Ballina Shire – dig deep! We still need to find another $35,000+. Surely we can do this if everyone makes some form of contribution.
Think of the potential benefits to you, your family and your community.
This is state of the art medical equipment – our hospital needs it and the people of Ballina deserve it!
Please, give us your support, donations are tax deductible.

Better Usual

I must begin by acknowledging the most recent wonderful efforts and contributions from our club team. They have been engaged in making sound preparations for the upcoming renovations whilst, at the same time, displaying high levels of commitment and professionalism in the constant delivery of so many successful activities. Here’s just a sample of what they’ve been up to ...
The Christmas holidays were a hectic but fun and festive time for us in our Clubs. We received an enormous amount of compliments relating to both our cuisine and entertainment throughout the entire summer period.
Our team also worked hard to deliver a sensational 2007 Australia Day Long Weekend program full of family activities. It was fantastic to witness the Ballina community gathering together in both the club and along the banks of the Richmond to enjoy our fireworks spectacular!
The 2007 Ballina Bridal Expo was also a huge hit with both visitors and wedding
exhibitors alike. Did you hear those wedding bells sounding out across our carpark? It was a very busy Sunday in Ballina indeed!
Congratulations – once again - to our Executive Chef Gerhard Spatz and Chef de Partie Nathan Sherwood as third time finalists in the ClubsNSW 2007 Chef’s Table culinary competition. With two successive Chef’s Table wins already under their hats ... we are immensely proud of our chefs ... always.
All of the above leads me to draw the obvious conclusion that it’s not only business as usual on our patch ... but even “better business than usual”. It is this theme that will continue as we head into the first phase of our renovation program. The renovation period represents an opportunity for our dedicated team to show what we can continue to deliver to our members and community at large ... whatever the circumstances.

Investment

The long awaited, major refurbishment of the ground floor of your club is about to commence! On completion, you will have one of the most attractive and comfortable hospitality venues on the Far North Coast. The main purpose of the work is to provide our members and community with amenities that you can continue to enjoy and be proud of.

Naturally, there will be the usual upheaval that occurs with major building works and the decision by the Board and Management to temporarily relocate our Ballina RSL Club Ground Floor operations to the First Floor was taken with your safety and well-being in mind. Whilst there will be some deviations from the norm for everyone - members, visitors and staff alike - in using the relocated facilities on the First Floor, please rest assured that our team will be doing everything possible to ensure your ongoing comfort.

After undertaking a detailed tender submission process, the Board has appointed James Clifford Constructions as the builder for the renovation works. Members will be pleased to know that every effort will be made to source local contractors for the various trades involved in the renovation works. Potentially, there may be instances where the Board and Project Superintendent form the opinion that the lowest tendered price does not conform to the needs of the club.

Gaming tax and smoking legislation remain as real issues for the club industry as we move forward and place our club in a strong position to continue to meet the needs of members ... and exceed your expectations in service standards and in what we are able to give back to our community.

At the end of the day, the upcoming changes at the club are simply another form of community investment. I thank you all for your loyalty and support.

Can they make it a Hat Trick?

The Ballina RSL Club is delighted to announce that, after wins in 2005 and 2006, their highly acclaimed culinary team – Executive Chef Gerhard Spatz and Chef de Partie Nathan Sherwood – has again reached the finals of the ClubsNSW ‘Chef’s Table’ competition.

Now in its third year, the competition is open to teams of 2 chefs working for the same club. To reach the finals, teams were required to submit a comprehensive menu, plus details on the operations of their kitchen.

This year’s event final was held in the club on 7 March. Gerhard and Nathan were again judged on the preparation, taste, presentation and keeping within the budget. They served 20 lucky guests including a team of 4 judges.

Executive Chef Gerhard Spatz explained that, “This competition provides fantastic recognition and publicity for the Ballina RSL Club and also acknowledges the quality of our everyday operations. The Chef’s Table principles are simply an extension of what our team aims to deliver every day of the week.

NSW Club Industry cuisine standards are high – quality combined with great value prices is what gives clubs the competitive edge. Nathan and I have really enjoyed the challenge of our third Finals Event.”

Winners of the competition will be announced at the ClubsNSW Awards of Excellence presentation dinner in Sydney on Friday, 1 June 2007.
Good luck Gerry & Nathan!

Things Are Looking Up

As you may remember, in late 2005, the Ballina RSL Club Ltd released its ‘vision for an exciting and secure future’ with a special feature in the October ‘05 edition of Club Life. That issue featured concept masterplans for the refurbishment of the Ground Floor of the River Street Club premises as top priority.

At the 2006 Ballina RSL Club Ltd Annual General Meeting, members were given an insight into the Ground Floor refurbishment and discussed the temporary facilities that will be on the First Floor during the first stage of the renovation program.

After much planning throughout 2006 by the Board of Directors and Management, the complete refurbishment of Ballina RSL Club’s Ground Floor is indeed about to become a reality.

Work will begin in mid-April (subject to Council approval) and is estimated to take around 16 – 18 weeks. On completion, the ground floor will have greatly enhanced river views, new outdoor terraces, gaming and cashier facilities, a new sports bar and lounge, a new café bar, reception and more.

Along with the exciting new look will come a range of wonderful additional services for club members and the wider community. The improvements will make the Club one of the region’s most impressive lifestyle and tourism attractions and take all of our services and facilities to a whole new level.

In fact, with an army of builders, carpenters, electricians, plumbers and painters taking over the Club’s ground floor for stage 1 of the project, we’re moving everything – dining, entertainment and all – up to the first floor!

It will be business as usual during the renovations, and you can rest assured that the management and staff of the Ballina RSL Club will do their utmost to ensure that your comfort, safety and enjoyment of the Club are not diminished.

We’ll even have ‘peep holes’ in the hoarding so you can keep track of progress – sticky-beaking is actively encouraged!

Once the work on the ground floor is complete, the first floor will resume its pre-renovation format.

Our ‘Guide to Using Ballina RSL’s First Floor Facilities during Renovations’ starts on page 5 of this issue of Club Life. Regular progress reports will be posted on the website (www.ballinarsl.com.au), and distributed through the Club’s e-newsletter (you can subscribe from the club’s website).
