The Ballina representative team has retained the Adam Gilchrist Under - 16's Sheild when they defeated Tweed Heads in the final of the NSW Far North Coast Interdistrict competition at Seabreeze Oval, Pottsville earlier this year. Tweed Heads were all out for 178 and Ballina finished the day on 7 - 181.

We wish to advise club members that Ballina RSL Club Ltd has been informed by the new landlord of the Tamar Village Shopping Centre that the club's current lease for Tamar Village Butchery, due to expire on the 10th November 2008, will not be renewed.

Clubs are indeed considerate in their dealing with their communities. The Ballina RSL and Ballina RSL Bowling Club have always shown a strong commitment to our community though our various, ongoing contributions. In the face of yet more recent industry change and issues, we will endeavour to do everything in our power to keep our community efforts and connections solid wherever possible.

It was fantastic to see the huge turn out for this year's Anzac Day Community Commemorative Services. I was also eager to learn more about the Gallipoli experience from those members who made the pilgrimage via the Club's annual Gallipoli Tour. Seems I might even be making the pilgrimage next year - it would be great to have many more members joining us in future.

My warmest wishes to all members and their families for a cosy Winter. Gustav, Henri and Philippe are three First World War veterans who spend their days on a quiet terrace of their military nursing home, meeting every morning to reflect on the peculiar circumstances in their equally peculiar nursing home. Nothing changes much for these men, until Gustav hatches a daring escape plan.

After meeting these three elderly oddballs, it becomes doubtful the scheme is destined for success. How could it? Henri is a romantic with a gammy leg who enjoys watching the pubescent girls at the nearby school. Philippe has a paranoid fear of being murdered by Madeleine, the tiny demanding nun who runs the home, and he’s also prone to passing out at odd moments due to a piece of shrapnel in his head. Gustav, the most commanding of the three, suffers from agoraphobia and extreme distrust of his fellow humans.

Will Henri realise that his dreams of dating young women are just that; dreams? Will Philippe’s paranoia lead him to the coincidental death he has predicted? Can Gustave get past the front gate?

Heroes, is a gentle comedy that sparkles with Tom Stoppard’s trademark wit and wordplay. His Olivier Award winning translation of Gerald Sibleyras’ Le Vent de Peupliers gives us a sense of what loneliness can do to people.

Director Jon Halpin says, “In 2006, Artistic Director Michael Gow asked me if I thought Heroes would be a good play for Queensland Theatre Company to produce. I’d only read about five pages by the time I knew it would be a hit. The characters are incredibly engaging yet at the same time hilariously flawed and Stoppard's dialogue has all his usual sparkle and wit. Having actors of the calibre of Dennis Olsen, Robert Alexander and Max Gillies in the cast simply makes the prospect of directing this play all the more exciting.”

‘The Power to Live’

It’s on again this year, literally with bells on.

Following track and field events for the Mobile Scooter brigade in Missingham Park, Ballina’s finest dressed scooters along with their pilots will parade along the shared pathways to Ballina RSL for the prize giving to take place at 2.00pm in the Auditorium. The successful contestant of the day will be presented with an energy efficient ‘Go Go Indoor Scooter’ valued at $1800.

In the Auditorium there will be controlled mayhem as the Expo would already be in full swing with the mood set at the10.00am opening with full rendition of song by the Sylvia Smith Singers. The mayhem will stem from the onslaught of the crowd who participated that morning in the Wild Card Competition convened in the Multi Function Room by Ballina RSL.

Dr Sue Page will enlighten her audience at 11.05am when she delivers the keynote address on her interpretation of ‘The Power to Live’

Around the jammed packed Auditorium will be the exhibitor’s intent on offering their wisdom on such matters as Health, Well Being, Finance and Leisure Activities for our citizens of 50 years plus. And, to make them feel good, Rockmans will present a 30 minute Fashion Parade by our “local lovelies” on the Stage ‘Catwalk’ each day at 12.00 noon. Attendees can then act out their fantasy and enter the Karaoke Competition being presented by Happy Daze Karaoke each afternoon in the Multi Function Room.

During the two days, attendees feeling stimulated for more action can join any of the five seminars designed to either help them find a job, stay active and keep healthy with financial independence.

And the bells will ring for one lucky attendee that will win the $1200 Cash ‘Lucky Door Prize, courtesy Josman Financial Services.

Older adults are invited to attend the Active Lifestyles weekend, proudly supported by the Ballina RSL Club at NSW Sport and Recreation’s Lake Ainsworth Centre this May.

“The weekend will allow participants to try activities they may never have experienced,” said Development Officer Debbie Grant.

“In addition to a great range of sport and recreational activities, there will be specialist speakers from various medical professions with advice about positive directions for health and wellbeing.”

Two years ago, Ballina RSL Bowling Club approached Westpac Life Saver Rescue Helicopter (WLSRH) to run Helicopter Housie on Monday nights. What a great idea it proved to be!

In the last two years, Ballina RSL Bowling Club’s Helicopter Housie has raised an impressive $41,222 for the service. And the ingredients for this success: great support from the club, excellent housie organisation, consistent attendances, cash prizes and friendly people.
WLSRH Business Development Manager Rod Harvey says, “We really appreciate the support from RSL Bowling Club Duty Manager Narelle and from Kim and her helpers.

We recently caught up with 4 of the youngest members of the Ballina RSL Sub-Branch All four are locals, from Ballina or Alstonville, and as the ‘next generation’ of our RSL Sub-Branch they’ve had varied military experiences.

Peter Crossingham, the youngest at just 30, served in the army for 9 years. He travelled to East Timor three times between 2000 and 2005. In East Timor, he was involved in water patrols. He described his first trip to Timor as being ‘adrenalin-filled’ and a ‘big adventure’. However, things changed by the third time round. He said, “You go over there to do what you’ve been trained to do. Of course, once you’re there, it’s not what you expect. What I remember most about my third visit is the smell … and then counting the days until we could depart”. With a young family back home, Peter decided it would be best to return to civilian life.

Tony Grant served for 19 years in the Australian infantry and as a medic. He saw service in East Timor, Malaysia and Ashmore Reef Naru. Tony spoke of incidents from survival training in Malaysia and his experiences as a medic in East Timor... from giant monkeys descending upon his camp in the middle of the night … to helping a Timorese mother who had been badly brutalised. Medically discharged three years ago, he said that support from both his wife (also associated with the military) and his army mates was priceless.

Andrew Collinge has been in the Army for 16 years. He started in Sydney as an Assault Pioneer building bridges and has been in many different operations since, including the Ready Reaction Force set up after 9/11, Border Patrols and jungle warfare training. His service has taken him to Malaysia, Singapore and the Solomons. He was aboard the HMAS Ballarat the day it ran aground at Christmas Island and recalls the vast movement of the ocean near Christmas Island the day the tsunami hit. Andrew says his family copes well during his times away, but admits that it can be hard on the kids.

Darren Murnane has served part-time with the army over the past 15 years. Training exercises have taken him to various locations in Australia, New Zealand and Hawaii. Such exercises see him away for around 2 – 4 weeks at a time. He called severe training exercises in the mountainous areas of New Zealand ‘enjoyable’ and gave a humorous account of hot meals dropped to the forces from a helicopter in Hawaii … they were authentic ‘KFC’!
Asked about the importance of the RSL Sub Branch and their reasons for joining, Peter, Tony, Andrew and Darren all strongly emphasised the “community” aspect and the irreplaceable bonds that exist between ex-service personnel.

The RSL is about carrying forth a legacy, it’s about learning and understanding, commemoration, remembrance and reflection. It’s about the tight community that is forged when one has served their country. Such mateship bonds were forged many years and wars ago … and similar bonds are still being forged today.

It’s all about “us”. By this I mean the positive relationships that we enjoy with our members and community.

We - the Board, management and staff - are looking forward to gaining a greater awareness as to member’s needs in relation to what we can offer across both of our clubs alongside what we can offer the wider community.
I would like to reiterate our Chairman’s words about the upcoming club survey. Please do take the time to complete it. Your feedback is very important to us. Together, we can achieve even greater things!

In the coming months, members and visitors to the Ballina RSL River St premises will see that construction is underway on the much talked about public, riverside boardwalk.

We anticipate that the boardwalk will bring about some substantial public benefits as it will provide complete access to the river and foreshore. A continuous path will run from Kerr St to the North Wall.
Ballina RSL’s development projects are certainly symbolic of a blossoming Ballina, with the community embracing
the river as one of the town’s major assets.

Our organisation has always been committed to growing the club by understanding the changing needs of the community and taking advantage of the physical beauty of the area.
With the recent Ballina RSL ground floor renovation, it was our objective to create a leading edge hospitality venue that would contribute significantly to the enjoyment of local residents and enhance their quality of life. We also intend to play an integral role in the development of Ballina as a tourism destination through the upgrading of the surrounding grounds and waterfront of what is truly a scenic wonder.

With Christmas and the holiday season behind us, we are entering into a period of consolidation and more significant planning for the future. Importantly, we will be sharing the survey results with club members in the next edition of Ballina Club Life. These results will act as a useful guide in the processes of future club decision making.

My first three months as the new club chairman have been exciting to say the least! Whilst carrying out my role as your representative in the community I have attended many functions and met many leaders and members of different organisations.

The people of Ballina have a great deal of pride in their community and it is indeed gratifying to see so many people who are prepared to put in time and effort with the only reward being that they have contributed to betterment of Ballina.

Our clubs enjoyed a wonderfully busy festive season. It’s great to see so many members and visitors enjoying our new facilities at the Ballina RSL and the relaxed atmosphere of our RSL Bowling Club in Canal Rd. Staff across both of our clubs are also to be congratulated on their impressive efforts throughout this period.

I’d like to take this opportunity to again wish all of our members a happy and healthy 2008. We’re off to a great start with a swag of special events on the horizon. I look forward to chatting with many more members at these upcoming gatherings including Easter, ANZAC Day and Mother’s Day.

Following a successful club tour to Gallipoli in 2007, the Ballina RSL has again extended ‘the experience of a lifetime’ to members in 2008.

To date, 13 club members have signed up to go on the tour and there are up to 12 spots still available for any interested members.

Ballina RSL Marketing Manager, Cathie Johnston, outlines: “Last year, a party of 10 club members journeyed over to Turkey for the special ANZAC Day pilgrimage. All confirmed upon their return that they found the experience to be one that they would long remember”.

“Some members say that their reason for going is because a relative actually served at Gallipoli, others say that it’s something they consider as being important for them to do as an Australian.”

The 2008 Ballina RSL Gallipoli Tour takes place over 8 days/7 nights from 20 April to 27 April. Itinerary highlights include the sights of Istanbul and 4 nights in Canakkale – the heart of the Gallipoli region. Expert local guides and Australian War Historians accompany the tour.

Tour costs AUD$1579 pp twin share (ex airfares) / Single Supplement AUD$399. Special Group Flight departures are available on application. All monies are due by 15 February 2008.
